Where you may get it wrong when writing English Essay

Reporting and Paraphrasing Introduction Paraphrasing is the use of different words to express meaning or clarify either written or spoken statement. Paraphrasing is a commonly used feature when writing. It is when one puts another person’s ideas in his or her own words (someone else’s ideas in your own words) and not just rewriting a paragraph. Some of the important words in paraphrasing include: passive this is written from an active sentence. I.e. John drives a car, this active the passive form of this is a car is driven by John. Existential clause in a sentence refers to the existence of something (there exists or there is) (Barkho, 2011). For example, ‘there are girls in the class’ this is an existential clause. Extra-position is the act of putting the keywords at the end of a sentence (Barkho, 2011). For example, ‘how frustrated with their kids are they?’ This can be rewritten as ‘how frustrated are they with their kids?’ cleft sentence is one that contains a main c lause ‘as well as a dependent clause’. I.e. who did Stan see at the party? It was Nick that Stan saw at the party. It was Stan who saw Nick at the party. The three sentences can be written as ‘Alice told me that Stan saw someone at the party that he knew from his high school days. It turns out it was Nick that Stan saw at the party. Fronting or preposing. Is a sentence construction in which a word group that customarily follows the verb is placed at the beginning of a sentence? (Barkho, 2011) For example, the garage was on the right of the house, ‘On the right of the house was the garage.’ Reported speech is the opposite of the direct speech for example I like ice cream (Direct speech). She says she likes ice cream (Reported speech) (Barkho, 2011). Question 2 article                   Mick and his brother Trig are hanging on a rail outside their home enjoying the scene of the neighbourhood. Dressed in their trainers, the caretaker to their estate sees them ordering them down from the rail. 19 year old Mick who himself is a member of the east London gang shouts back at the caretaker and threatens to beat him up. These kinds of confrontation between Mick add the caretaker is the order of the day in the inner-city London, symbolizing broken Britain. Having been raised from a broken family (fronting), his life had gone a mess. He indulged in sex at the age of 14 and at age 15 he was doing drugs. Despite his good performance in GCSE which could have enabled him secure a place in Sixth Form College, he only looked forward to one place that he dreamed of joining was Feltham jail (Reported speech). This urge came from the time he watched a documentary on TV which portrayed young inmates. Mick’s wish was achieved (passive) when he was sentenced (passive) for 14 months after being charged (passive) with robberies in east London. According to Mick, the Feltham turned to be the best place he has ever been. Three meals in a day, TV, private bedroom (existential) and other luxuries are part of what you enjoy in the jail. The impression to the young people outside is that, they want to be jailed as they think it is an honour, and it is even better than school. The mentality in the jail among the youth is that one does not have to hustle for a living as everything is provided. For the rest of boys in the streets and outside there, going to Feltham is a key part in their lives. Moreover, they find it a substitute to their homes and the chaotic life associated to the homes. The main question arising from this perception is ‘if the prisons are no longer deterrent, then what could be to the young ones in the society. Lewis refers to Mick as a head case Mick. This is after saving him from the young gang that hand threatened to him. Lewis got Mick into a plumbing course hoping to turn him round but to no avail. Despite the situation Mick talks of other gangs made of youth such as the Black hawk boys and Asian gang. However, his group is the most feared d in east London. Despite the police being aware of his group, they are not successful in hunting them down as there is no particular group leader. Mick’s day is entailed with taking care of the drug business. He gets the staff from the supplier, and takes to his customers, later in the day he enjoys the evening with his girlfriend. Despite dong the drugs, Mick claims it is easy to sell wind, but it does not make good money as cocaine and heroin do. Despite the rotten life in drugs, Mick has a dream of a good big house and cars and hopes to one day get a job, but he is not sure of the best time to legit. A two year feud with another boy leaves Mick with a gashed lip. Despite respect for Lewis, Mick plans to make it even with the boy by revenging. He likens the life to a video game you either die early or you play to the end. The incident makes Mick always walk around armed with a weapon (9mm Glock pistol). The jail is not solving the purpose intended, and Lewis looks for an alternative to save the at-risk boys in London. He looks forward to coming up with 1000 ‘Capital Men’ to save the boys. However, the menace has greatly the black families which the politicians have all feared to address. After a period of 5years in drugs and city crimes, Mick is tired of it now. However, trig who has all time watched his mentor Mick, says, â€Å"I dint fear Feltham if Mick made it, I can also handle it†. At the end, Mick says â€Å"Young people are like blind people crossing the highway. They cannot be able to tell what coming down road and instead he to me for guidance. Felth am was a good experience but as one gets older, you comprehend there are better places to go on holiday. I can tell Trig that, but I highly doubt he would even listen to me.† (Direct speech). Irac Case Brief State V. Mcneely

State v. McNeely 358 S. W. 3d 65 MO. (2012) Facts: The defendant was stopped by a Missouri state highway patrolman for speeding and during this stop the trooper noticed that the defendant was displaying all the tell-tale signs of being intoxicated; blood shot eyes, slurred speech, and the smell of alcohol on his breath. This stop then changed from being a speeding stop to a DWI investigation. The trooper had the defendant get out of his truck and perform standard field sobriety tests. The defendant did poorly on the test so the trooper arrested him for driving while intoxicated then, he asked him to take a breathalyzer which the defendant refused. The trooper then drove the defendant to the hospital to obtain a blood test to verify its alcohol content level. Once at the hospital the defendant refused the blood test but the trooper demanded it be done anyway, without securing a warrant, based on what he believed was a recent change in the law since time is critical to blood-alcohol con tent levels. The blood sample was analyzed and the defendant’s blood alcohol content was well over the legal limit. The trooper believed at the time that officers no longer needed to obtain warrants for nonconsensual blood test, due to a change in Missouri’s implied consent laws FN2. This belief was based on an article written by a traffic safety resource prosecutor. The defendant moved to suppress the results of the blood alcohol test as evidence, citing that the blood draw was a violation of his Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable searches and seizures. The trial court sustained the motion. The Circuit Court, Cape Girardeau County and state appealed. Issues Did the State Trooper violate the defendants Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable search and seizures with the warrantless blood draw? Is the natural dissipation of blood-alcohol evidence alone a sufficient necessity to dispense with the warrant requirement under the fourth amendment? Rule The Fourth amendment to the United States Constitution ensures the right of people to be secure in their person†¦against unreasonable searches and eizures. This includes not only a person’s dwelling but also includes the intrusion of a person’s body when no emergency exists. The United States Supreme Court has continually stated that† any searches conducted outside the judicial process, without prior approval by a magistrate are per se unreasonable under the fourth amendment subject only to a few specifically established and well delineated exceptions. The limited exceptions to drawing a person’s blood without consent would rest on special facts where the officer reasonably believed there was probable cause that incriminating evidence would be found and that if the time needed to obtain a warrant would endanger life, allow a suspect to escape, or they were faced with an emergency situation where delaying to get a warrant would lead to destruction of evidence. A nalysisThe testimony of the Trooper is that the defendant was under arrest for DWI after showing obvious signs of being intoxicated and then failing the field sobriety test when he refused the breathalyzer and blood test. The trooper, who has had over 17 years of experience in obtaining warrants for blood draws, believes that taking the defendant to the hospital for a blood test against his will, without a warrant, is justified because of an article recently published stating that the law had been changed. The article was written by a traffic safety resource prosecutor and was published in â€Å"Traffic Safety News† referred to a Supreme Court case where a limited exception to the warrant requirement for taking nonconsensual blood samples in alcohol related arrests was allowed for special facts, that an officer would be faced with an emergency situation where delaying to obtain a warrant would threaten destruction of the evidence. The trooper in this case was not faced with spe cial facts because there was no accident to investigate and there was no medical attention needed to anyone so there was no delay that would threaten the destruction of the evidence. There is also no evidence that the trooper would not have been able to obtain a warrant if he had attempted to do so.No case in Missouri supports a per se rule that the natural dissipation of blood-alcohol is alone sufficient to constitute exigent circumstance that would permit officers in every DWI case to take blood from a suspect without consent or a search warrant. Conclusion The defendant’s Fourth amendment right to be free from unreasonable searches of his person was violated. The trial courts judgment to suppress is affirmed. The case is remanded.

My Favorite Dine in Restaurants Essay

I love all different kinds of food. There are a lot of places to go sit and have a nice family dinner or a dinner date with the boyfriend. The best friend also loves to dine in at a small restaurant out in Sturtevant. Its small but the breakfast is very good there. I love to eat but I don’t like the weight gain. I don’t think anyone does really. Food now days have gotten us so overweight with all the fat in food it’s just not as healthy anymore. There are so many different types of restaurants to choose from you can eat different ethnic foods all over the U.S. Mexican restaurant One of my favorites! The enchilada dinner plate is so good. It comes with three enchiladas, rice, beans, sour cream and guacamole. You can go to a authentic restaurant and get some really good ones. The green ones are much tastier then the red ones. They are made with different kinds of peppers. My favorite restaurant for Mexican food is Tacos El Rey. Not sure if it is an authentic one, but the enchilada plate sure is good. They also make beef sirloin tip burritos that are also very good. Made with beans, cheddar cheese and beef tips. They make the burritos pretty big and you can get full of off just one. I would recommend going here to try their Mexican food. Italian Restaurant It’s always nice to have a little pizza sauce once in a while. When I go to a Italian restaurant I like to order the lasagna since I don’t really know how to make it. All those layers of meat, cheese and noodles can really hit the spot. Oh and can’t forget the garlic bread, those go so well together. My daughter usually orders the spaghetti and I always tell her that if she wants spaghetti we could have just stayed home and I could have made it for her. I think she likes to slurp up the noodles and then wipes away the sauce left on her face with her shirt sleeve. But she loves it and it’s cute to see her eat the spaghetti. American restaurant Steak with sautà ©ed mushrooms and A sauce with a cold cherry pepsi sound really good right about now. I haven’t eaten steak for a while. I like it medium rare which is not so common for a Mexican. We usually cook our steak until it is not pink anymore. When I was younger I would get my steaks well done, until my first boyfriend showed me that a medium rare steak is so much juicer. I immediately fell in love with the first bite. I now order them medium rare, with sautà ©ed mushrooms, a loaded baked potatoe and a cherry pepsi. No more overly cooked steaks which is so hard to chew. Think I’ll be going to get that steak sooner than later.

Teaching of Advanced Mathematics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Teaching of Advanced Mathematics - Essay Example But before that, we must delve further into the importance of the questioning mechanism, thus I shall bring out opinions presented by established mathematicians in relation to this study, as applied to classroom teaching of Mathematics. Ainley, J. as mentioned above, interprets her findings about questioning techniques, on the premise that, when, applied to classroom study, everytime the teacher asks a question, it merely implies her underlying desire in testing the student's learning outcome. Therefore, a teacher's questioning style is described as "guess what is in my mind" tactics. Some of the frequent techniques of mathematical questioning range from using open questions, not commenting on answers but waiting for more, bringing in other people, collecting a range of responses on the board, seeking agreement, alternatives and dissent, using or not using "hands-up", using names to generate particular response, remaining silent until something else is said, and eventually all effort s culminating towards a successful learning outcome. Jim Smith, in his article "Questioning Questioning" (1986) in the same study as Ainley, advises to maintain a balance between saying too much so that things become repetitive, to saying nothing at all. Suggesting that students be encouraged to talk enthusiastically about how they have helped other students, be allowed to interrupt teachers with relevant questions, and thereby, enable them to take part in the scheme by Skemp called "relational" learning (1976 & 1993), which is a flexible methodology that imparts in the student, a genuine interest in the deeper aspects of learning Mathematics, not only through methods and formulae but also by developing in them the much-needed grasping power to form powerful connections, interpretations, eliminate unnecessary fear of complex figures and symbols (such as surds, integrands, graphs, tables, etc.) and a chain of unbroken knowledge to further advance their learning capabilities. Both mathematicians have affirmed the potent power of "testing" methodologies over simple "seeking" questions. As discussed in relevant examples above, upon our own close introspection, we can find that several of these questioning techniques are already followed by us in enhancing day-to-day learning activities whatever be the subject of study. In the course lesson example mentioned in this paper, I have designed my scheme to accommodate this very school of thought. In an effort to understand the constructive ideas behind methods of questioning, we have at our disposal, a

European union law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

European union law - Essay Example Initially, EU member states concentrate upon the discrimination on the basis of two respects as described by the EU law. Firstly, the economic objectives of EU commission is to create a common employment market with the help of equal treatment of the workers which are required to prohibit discrimination on the basis of nationality under the Article 45 Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU). Secondly, the workers who belong from an EU nation should not be treated differently in the job market of any other EU nations on the basis of gender differences restricting discrimination practice based on sex1. Taking into consideration the ethical practices and the requirement of equal treatment of employees, the general guidelines of non-discrimination was implemented through the EU legislative emphasising on gender discrimination concerning the equal pay policies for both men and women under the Article 157 of the TFEU which was formerly attributed as Article 119 of the Europe an Commission (EC). The ‘pay gap’ between both the genders is regarded as applicable in every member state of EU according to the EU law. On the basis of the implications of ‘pay gap’, the EU legislation promotes equal pay in order to evaluate the gap between the income levels of both the genders whose pay structure is quite higher. Contextually, the employment segmentation on the basis of gender implies that in many employment workplaces, the male employees predominantly occupied the labour market within the EU member states. In the context of equal pay, the aforementioned aspect was applicable when the discrimination principle of the EU law was further extended to facilitate the equal pay of workers. Moreover, on the basis of the case law of European Court of Justice (ECJ), it can be affirmed that the general guidelines regarding the equal payment for both female as well as male employees rendered due consideration towards social objectives of growth and overall development. Discrimination of gender within the employment takes place when an employee obtains special treatments on the basis of various arbitrary criteria such as gender, religion, age, parental status, socio-economic background, race and political opinion. It is worth mentioning in this context that the notion, ‘discrimination’, was initiated within EU discourse in the form of restriction under the Article 18 TFEU. As per the EU commission, ‘Council Directive 75/117/EEC’ implemented policies obstructing gender discrimination affirming that there should be the equal pay for both men and women. Furthermore, Council Directive 76/207/EEC also executed certain guidelines regarding equal treatment for both the genders on the basis of extra pay, promotion, training and working situations2. In present business context, it has been observed that most of the working women in EU member states have to face ‘deep-rooted’ injustice within their workplace, compromising with lesser payment compared to their male colleagues irrespective of their similar job responsibilities. Hence, equal treatment among the men and women workers have emerged as one of the significant aspects within the EU member states. It is in this context t

The Body Gender and Sexuality Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

The Body Gender and Sexuality - Essay Example They understand on the first sight of a human and animals by their bodies. Gender is best understood by kids through moms and dads. The body parts inside and outside are almost similar. Thoughts and feelings are common for both genders. Hopes, dreams and activities in several arenas are the same for both genders. The knowledge of gender is conceived fairly well even by a school going boy or girl. It is the sexual orientation which is the complex subject for kids – in fact for the whole human race – to understand in its fullest depth. The personal wishes, desires, aspirations and goals manifest in establishing the sexuality of human beings. For example, consider the following statement: The baby boy is fondled and kissed in his sleep. Can we ascertain from this sentence ‘who fondled and kissed?’ Was it a father or a mother? Was it by a man or woman? But the baby boy would exactly find who did it. How? The way and style of fondling or kissing are best differe ntiated by the baby. Thus it is the life style in which we establish our manliness and womanliness which decides our sexuality. We the human ever like pleasure, despite the fact that the other way is also true to be faced. We wish to derive pleasure in everything including our body. This kind of bodily pleasure deriving is named sexual by many folks. But it is quite natural for any living being to derive pleasure from body. Because, it is through the senses centred in the body we are to derive pleasure. Pleasure normally is asexual. It is purely psychological. In our going after pleasure, we find pleasure often comes from the style of being rather than in any other technique. No human being can think anything out of his/her body.... (Bhattacharyya, 2002, p.82). No human being can think anything out of his/her body. Just because one is sane and healthy, his/her ideologies need not be out of body experience. Physique is always physique. But the social norms often get confused with physical and mental health issues. As we have already put pleasure derived from body is completely relished and experienced by the self/soul through senses. This is well established by one Caroline’s (who is physically disabled) encounter with a physician who poisoned her mind with a prescription that she might not have loved her husband. She had just approached the physician to get medical relief for her hip pain suffered during her sexual intercourse with her husband. The price in terms of mental pain she paid for her approaching the physician is horrible. Social crippling of the psyche is more painful than physical disablement, which is medically curable.(Shakespere, 2002, p.145) MEDICAL PERCEPTION OF BODY AND SEXUALITY: Chemic al composition of human body was described in the second half of 18th century dealt with chiefly the chemical composition of food. Different body tissues were compared with various types of food. However, the concept of reference man and reference women developed in late 19th century especially during 1970 when body composition was begun to be measured with the fat mass and fat-free mass for man and woman. While a reference man was gauged with 3% essential fat, a reference woman was found to be composed of 12% essential fat. Essential fat in women includes the fat in mammary glands and pelvic region.(Gropper et al, 2009, p.283) Medicine and chemistry thus has begun to view human body as a product of reconstruction. The analysis of

Controlling (Principles of Management Mod 5 SLP) Essay

Controlling (Principles of Management Mod 5 SLP) - Essay Example In controlling, equity bank applies action accountability that holds each employee accountable for their actions. Having trained employees on their responsibilities, each employee is left to act under minimal supervision keeping in mind that the outcome of his/her action has either a positive or negative implication on his/her performance record. Operating in a very competitive industry, Equity Bank’s management uses controlling as business strength so as to move ahead of its competitors (Alembi, 2009), who seem to have similar strategic plans. As a matter of fact, all financial organizations in the region have almost equal capacities to acquire employees, resources and mobilize their clients. However, through action accountability, equity bank has managed to rapidly grow relative to other financial institutions. In implementing this control effort, the management allows for both internal and external control of their employees. Through internal control, the management relies on employees, especially heads of various departments but not restricting the lower class employees, to exercise self-control. In fact, the employees who are preliminarily motivate by the fact that they will be rewarded for extra ordinarily good performance, are allowed to fulfill their job expectations by their own will and procedures. Moreover, equity bank provides their employees with sufficient resources and clear performance objectives that enable them deal with millions of clients to whom they have to attend to. In addition to self-control, each employee is answerable to an administrator who minimally supervises him, and is linked with performance appraisal system and employee discipline system that reward or punish extreme cases of performance respectively. However, although there are rewards and punishments, the firm capitalizes on always correcting its employees in efforts to improving individual performance in

Analysis - Research Paper Example But the use of buffered lidocaine faces some issues as it is a compounded medication and needs to be procured from the pharmacy and with its short half-life the FDA requires this solution to be replaced weekly which has been adopted even for this present study. In the case of bacteriostatic normal saline, the presence of benzyl alcohol as a preservative and an anesthetic has been proposed as a suitable alternative for intradermal lidocaine. Other local anesthetics such as the topical lidocaine-prilocaine suffer from certain disadvantages as it is inappropriate for use on the day of the surgery, is not economical and needs to be applied 30 minutes prior to starting the IV for best results. The practice of using intradermal bacteriostatic saline instead of intradermal buffered lidocaine as the former was cost effective was adopted by a Midwestern community hospital as a pain management strategy during surgeries. However, the concern of the nurses in the hospital has been the lesser num ber of comparative studies that have determined efficacy of the two anesthetics. Additionally they have provided inconclusive evidence about the use of either intradermal lidocaine or bacteriostatic saline as an effective anesthetic prior to IV injection. Hence the present study aimed to determine the efficacy of the two anesthetics in order to bring about a practice change. ... However, previous studies have been inconclusive in comparing the effectiveness of the two anesthetics: intradermal lidocaine and bacteriostatic saline. Hence the present study was designed to compare the efficacy and determine the degree of pain using the two anesthetics and a randomized double-blind; quasi-experiment, and two-treatment, parallel designed study was conducted. The study was started after approval by the institutional review board. Both male and female same-day surgery patients in the age group of 18 to 80 were invited to take part in the study. The inclusion criteria were the presence of a physician’s order for a peripheral IV line and an ability to express the level of pain experienced. The sample size of the study included 150 adults who were admitted for same-day surgery between the months February and May. Two subjects required more than one venipuncture and in view of inaccurate reporting of the pain they were excluded from the study and others who were e xcluded include subjects allergic to lidocaine and others who had to take pain medication in the previous four hours. The degree of pain experienced by the subjects was measured using a modified verbal numeric rating scale (VNRS) in which the pain was recorded on a scale of 0 to 10. Buffered lidocaine for the study was prepared by a pharmacist using lidocaine and sodium bicarbonate and commercially available bacteriostatic saline was used. All the study subjects were blinded to the study solution and the basic demographics such as age, sex, race, IV location and catheter size were collected. The study protocol was explained to both the study participants and nurses who were responsible for the catheterization and informed consent was obtained from the participants.

Ethics in criminal justice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Ethics in criminal justice - Essay Example The selective enforcement of laws is only rarely an outcome of law enforcement corruption.. An overview of history evidences that during periods when the perpetrators of a particular type of crime occupy a position of singular importance, there is a tendency to `look the other way.’ This was the case during the 1920s with Prohibition, to name but one example. Selective enforcement as determined by the relative power of the perpetrators is immoral and ethically indefensible. More often than not, the selective enforcement of laws is predominantly, a consequence of volume of crime versus the resources at the possession of law enforcement forces. In the not uncommon periods where violent crime rates supersede non-violent crime rates, law enforcement tends to direct its attention to the latter and overlook victimless crimes within the context of the former. The implication here is that law enforcement may overlook crimes of possession or substance abuse consequent to the imperatives of focusing resources on the combating of the drug trade itself. Likewise, law enforcement is unlikely to enforce laws pertaining to petty shoplifting when resources are better expended in the combating of aggravated assault, grand larceny and armed robbery. The implication here is that the selective enforcement of law is a consequence of priorities. Even while conceding to the fact that absolute ethics dictates the uniform implementation of all operational laws at all times, law enforcement’s failure to do so is not indicative of a breakdown of ethics. In fact, given the motivations for law enforcement’s selective implementation of laws, their doing so may be categorized as an exercise of utilitarian ethics. In accordance with utilitarian ethical systems, both the reasons which motivated an action and the consequences of the said action determine

Reading Journal - Essay Example However, this only happens when the people involved can relate or interact in one way or another, subject to the language factor that brings them together. Without language, therefore, personal and social relations and interactions become crippled to some significant extent. The manner in which Hoffman captures these aspects is thrilling. Another interesting factor of language is the development of culture. Notably, Hoffman’s work demonstrates this by showing the relationship between her and Canada, and later the United States. On the same note, her family associates with Canadian culture through language and the sense of belonging that attaches this family to the new country of Canada (Hoffman 219). Every aspect of life exhibited by Hoffman and her family denote the presence and subsequent practice of language and culture. The theme of language and culture is further exhibited as the family gets used to thee Canadian life. This is a new country and a new environment for both Hoffman and the family. The language they knew is foreign in Canada. The culture they were used to is a new phenomenon that does not feature in Canada or the United States. Amid difficulties, Hoffman and her family find it easy to engage Canadian people in conversations due to their ability to overcome language and communication barriers. Persons who once encountered difficulties in language now encounter ease in expressing themselves. In order to fit into the Canadian system of social life, there was need for a change and/or shift in language and culture. Hoffman can now identify with her language and culture in the foreign land, and so does her family. Hoffman made a lifetime decision to have her accustomed to the Canadian way of life. Ultimately, her family took the same course of action. From the Polish way of life, Hoffman and her family undergo a state of language and culture change to embrace the

IKEAs transport methods Essay Example for Free

IKEAs transport methods Essay Allowing the public to visit the business Makes the customer feel more welcome, and at home with IKEA if they feel involved by learning more about the company.  Public relations can be a very expensive form of promotion, and it can be difficult for businesses to assess the effect of public relations on sales.  Catalogues are a huge part of advertisement for IKEA, its relatively cheap when compared to TV adverts, and its fairly easy to get to the customer, IKEA print 131 million copies of there catalogue making it the most widely distributed commercial publication in the world. Having picked up a couple of the latest IKEA catalogues and handbooks, its clear that IKEA thrive on simplicity. The IKEA text is the same font on all brochures, with the traditional blue and yellow logo on the bottom hand side of the page this creates continuity which means people recognise it straight away when they see it again, the traditional yellow and blue logo is based on the colours of there home country Sweden. The background images are warm, cosy, family pictures, one containing a large sofa with numerous pillows, the other an aqua blue kitchen. This gets the message across to the reader that there is a large range of products available, furthermore on the front cover they get the message about there prices, Pay less, enjoy more and your 100 page guide to making an affordable, inspired choice. This encourages the public to go through the IKEA catalogue. Furthermore the catalogue brings the IKEA store into your home, its the best way to prepare for a visit to IKEA. d)Place is another term for distribution. It covers the range of activities necessary to ensure that goods and services are available to customers. Deciding on the right place involves a range of decisions.  A business needs to consider the most cost-effective way of getting its products and service to the customers. It needs to look at the implications for its profit margins of each means of distribution. The growth in use of the internet has encouraged even small businesses to use websites to sell their products to what can be a global market. This can be highly cost effective means of reaching a wide target audience, but is not suitable for all business and all products.  Businesses seek to design marketing mixes that are complementary and work together to benefit the business and to maximise sales. For example, Ikea promotes itself to its target audience on the basis that it offers the lowest possible prices. Place is important to Ikea, and the company locates stores in areas where it costs less to set up, eg on the outskirts of major cities. Which targets both high income earners and low. IKEAs transport methods are highly effective, large volumes in combination with flat packages are important in helping IKEA to transport products economically from the supplier via the stores to the customers. Flat packs mean that IKEA do not have to pay for transporting or storing unnecessary air and that not only means lower warehousing and distribution costs, but also less impact on the environment. At present 20 % of all IKEA goods are transported by rail. It makes sense for Ikea to target a wide range of customers. This is referred to as mass marketing. But theres the other side of it where in some situations they will target small sections of the market. Taken to the limit, this might involve catering for a small select group of customers a target market that has very specific needs. I.E childrens section.  In mass marketing, Ikea would aim their products at most of the available market and normally try to sell a range of similar products to all customers. Mass marketing is possible if the products are popular and purchased by many different types of people. For example Ikeas furniture products are well suited to being sold in mass markets. Businesses must be able to produce on a large scale if they are to sell successfully in a mass market. A company may have to invest heavily in resources such as buildings, machinery and vehicles. Usually, firms also have to be very price competitive to flourish in mass markets. By contrast, niche marketing involves companies identifying and meeting the needs of relatively small areas of the market. The aim is to cater for the needs of customers that have not been met sufficiently by other business, and niche marketing is one way in which small businesses can operate profitably in markets that are dominated by large firms. An example would be Ikea and their play pen for younger children.

Again in 1990s the brand faced severe positioning issued when it moved to Asia and company hired a new CEO and new management took over the company to rejuvenate companys product line, pricing, and its standing. They made brand innovative, changed the target market and made the licensing very strong. They made the companies enjoy the boom but further decisions of line extension were still a matter of concern for the company. The actions they should take are the proper market survey and Research for the new product; they should carry out proper likeness test for the new brand. It should prudently define its distribution strat egy along with the media strategy. They should go for proper planning before launch of new perfume and other brands this brand can be proved to be very successful if they would make it according to the taste of the target customers. Introduction: The company was established in 1856 as fabric retailer it gone through extensive brand extension in two decades through licensing and globalization, it made numerous distributions channels and operated in numerous countries. Company was purchased by GUS (Shipping Corporation) in 1955, it went through global extension in 1970s and before that it went for IPO (Initial public offering) of the shares. In 1990s company got lesser control on the licensing and distribution channels and they went into extensive brand line extension decisions which had a negative impact on the companys performance , quality focused was lost and company decided to change its positioning and licensing strategy along with the management. CEO got changed and Rose Marie Bravo took charge of the company and she changed the team and hired those who were fashion oriented and who knew the latest trends, she successfully made the company as one of the premium leading brand again , She proved to be the best CEO in year 2005. And the company went into numerous strategic decisions in her era and this era was considered as the best era for the company. Now the new strategic decision by the company to go through is line extension, brand extension and market extension. Next portion of the report deals with the Marketing Mix , analysis of environmental factors and decisions of companys strategic moves to make it market leader by proper positioning strategy. Marketing Mix: This portion of the report deals with the product, pricing placement and distribution strategy of the product. Product: Product line was very narrow in the beginning they started off with a fabric retail store then they produced a fabric that was breathable fabric they moved into the fabric for uniform of army in world war and this was the basic positive strategic move of the company. They went for diversification the later years they had numerous brands and products. They followed traditions with innovations and tried to follow same patterns. Pricing: It was a premium brand and their cost and prices were high but later on with their loose licensing policy and extension there was in consistency in their prices which made companies image bad. It was perceived as an ordinary brand. Later on management worked on Premium pricing strategy to make its positing and perception better in the market. Placement and distribution: Companys distribution was entirely based on licensing and company owned stores, initially it was following Exclusive distribution strategy, then it moved to extensive distribution strategy which ruined the brand image later on they went for selective distribution strategy and made strong control on licensing and distribution. Promotion: In initial days promotion was the biggest issue company positioned itself as the premium product and advertised by using the selective media in the beginning. Later on when the company went global it faced many issues in its promotion , media selection was not proper in other companies which ruined the brand image, later with Rose Bravo and its new team more promotional activities were carried out. They hired new photographer, new agency and new media team; they launched new campaign and advertised in good magazines. They endorsed their products through several means. Celebrity endorsement was one way. They changed Company name and logo to give it a novel effect and made it innovative by changing its packaging. Environmental Analysis It is evaluation of the probable impacts of external and internal forces and conditions and their effect on the survival and growth of the company, so there are numerous factors that affected the companies positioning and branding lets discuss all of the factors in detail along with companies competitive advantage and Unique selling proposition. BCG Matrix According to the BCG matrix the product was in question mark stage in Asian countries as the market share is low because of bad economic condition, in some countries it was a Cash Cow and in UK and US this brand is proved to be Star with the high market share and high growth potential. Porters Five Forces: Porters five forces in this case can evaluate Burberrys position in the market as compared to its competitors, suppliers and customers. Suppliers Bargaining Power: It was a British based company and it was into production of its own fabric so in its case suppliers power was not the major issue. Initially it was not facing any problem and there was consistency in its suppliers and it continued in the later years as well. So we can say that in this case Suppliers power was very low. Customers Bargaining Power: Customers bargaining power was also low in this case because the product was standardized and it was a premium brand with premium quality so customer had lesser bargaining power. Substitutes: Substitutes were the basic threat for the company as there were numerous products in the market that can replace the use of Burberrys products but its breathable cloth was the best one still they had to make their products outclass to combat the threat of substitutes by positioning their product as those which simply have no comparison. Rivalry: Rivalry and competition was strong. Foreign and Local companies were striving for share. Numerous brands were there in the markets which were offering the same products. And pirated products made more problems in Asia and other countries where there are lesser laws on pirating Entrants: The barriers to entry were very low as any company can jump into the line of fabric as the initial cost is very low but competing with a brand like Burberry was the basic concern for the companies. Rivalry Intense competition (High) Competitive Advantage: Companys competitive advantage was its patterns, styles originality quality, Symbol of royalty, luxury and durability. Company was in the business for more than hundred years and it had gone through many hard times but it tried to regain its competitive advantage and its originality till the end. The companies motive was to provide functionality along with class,, it tried to meet customer expectations till the present date. PEST Analysis: Political environment Political conditions did not have any impact on company standing as the policies of trade are seemingly pro-trade and there is no single evidence of political disturbance. Economic environment: Economic Condition was not very suitable for the company as this era was the era of recession so the company faced many points to take proper strategic decisions. It went thorough public offering and was being acquired by shipping company to sustain the business. Social environment Social environment was very good because people were more convenience and fashion oriented and they wanted innovation and stylish fabric which could also serve their functional need. Technological environment Company went through numerous technological changes by devising new ways of production of fabrics and efficient plants. SWOT Analysis: Strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats we have identified from the case are given below. Strengths: Companies basic strength was it standing and its fame people used to trust the brand, it was more than 150 years old brand having extensive product line, its premium quality and trust it built up in years was its strength. Its functional fabric was its excellence. Weaknesses: The weaknesses of the brand are its perception. It was perceived as a conservative brand having old customers and no innovation, its price and distribution inconsistency made more problems . Its image was eroding. Marketing plan and positioning was up-to-the mark. Opportunities: They have heritage and strong brand association. They can invent new product lines. They have capital so they can start with new products and can cater the needs of several markets. Global dealing with proper licensing was the biggest opportunity. Threats: The biggest threat for the company was the wrong strategic move, company had to compete in the market as many brands were in the marketing offering the same products . Corporate Strategy Ownership: Company had a single retail store in the beginning, then it went through the process of licensing and to Mitsui and Sanyo in Japan, then in went to Public offerings and global stores and distributions through wholesalers and retailers in year 1970, In year 1990 it took extensive licensing which proved to be damaging and later on after the change in management they made this licensing policy very aligned to the company policy. Now the company has 3162 wholesales, 434 departmental stores, 2728 specialty stores and its planning to have market extension in coming decade as well. Target Market and Positioning Strategy: Initially they targeted all age groups who belonged to all occupation groups, then with the deterioration of the brand they left with the age group which was above 40 so company took strategic move and became fashion oriented to target the younger segment along with the old age people. Positioning strategy of the product was very good in the initially days , it was positioned as a premium brand and the brand of the adventurous people later on with its extension and weak licensing policies it went through numerous problems. It was endorsed thorough the adventurous people initially then its perception of quality and consistency went bad and later on with the change of management it was positioned as the product of sporty people. Extensive Research and Development: It is evident from the success of the brand that Burberry has had a very strong Research and Development (RD) in the past. The higher management should ensure that before the launch of a new product in the market the marketing department is fully aware of the market the brand intends to target in order to get the wanted response from the customers. It is very important to keep the image of Burberry as a luxurious brand intact. This will not only help in increasing fans, but will also give the brand needed exposure. Lucian Freud Essay -- Visual Arts Paintings Art Artist Painter Essays

Lucian Freud Freud, Lucian (1922- ). German-born British painter. He was born in Berlin, a grandson of Sigmund Freud, came to England with his parents in 1931, and acquired British nationality in 1939. His earliest love was drawing, and he began to work full time as an artist after being invalided out of the Merchant Navy in 1942. In 1951 his Interior at Paddington (Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool) won a prize at the Festival of Britain, and since then he has built up a formidable reputation as one of the most powerful contemporary figurative painters. Portraits and nudes are his specialities, often observed in arresting close-up. His early work was meticulously painted, so he has sometimes been described as a `Realist' (or rather absurdly as a Superrealist), but the subjectivity and intensity of his work has always set him apart from the sober tradition characteristic of most British figurative art since the Second World War. In his later work (from the late 1950s) his handling became much broader. Normally I underplay facial expression when painting the figure, because I want expression to emerge through the body. I used to do only heads, but came to feel that I relied too much on the face. I want the head, as it were, to be more like another limb. - Lucian Freud Freud was born in Berlin in December 1922, and came to England with his family in 1933. He studied briefly at the Central School of Art in London and, to more effect, at Cedric Morris's East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in Dedham. Following this, he served as a merchant seaman in an Atlantic convoy in 1941. His first solo exhibition, in 1944 at the Lefevre Gallery, featured the now celebrated The Painter's Room 1944. In the s... ...h seeing. His attempt to demystify the human form whilst recording the stories of his subjects marks a significant stance against the vacuity of much of contemporary art, which refuses to acknowledge even the existence of such stories and glorifies only the visible form. Even though he does not explore those stories, the fact that Freud records their presence within his subjects makes his work compellingly humane. "My work is purely autobiographical,...It is about myself and my surroundings. I work from people that interest me and that I care about, in rooms that I know... When I look at a body it gives me choice of what to put in a painting, what will suit me and what won't. There is a distinction between fact and truth. Truth has an element of revelation about it. If something is true, it does more than strike one as merely being so." - Lucian Freud

Perspective on Health Care Paper Essay

A)What interested me about the history of health care? There’s no doubt that the healthcare industry offers plenty of profitable careers. In fact most of the best paid and the fast growing careers belong to this industry. That’s why I am heading in Health Care Administration because I want to be an administrator for Center of Disease Control (CDC). I have passion for serving people and to make positive impact in their lives. I consider it as one of the fastest growing healthcare career and a high paying medical career and don’t only offer me a decent pay, but they provide me several other reasons. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, eight of the top 20 fastest growing careers belong to the medical field or the healthcare industry. The industry has offer as many as 13 million jobs. Technologies had given a path way to the continuous advancement in medical field in the health system. I have to say that what interested me in the history of health care are the development of the vaccinations for disease throughout the years as well as the developments of programs like the Center for Control of Disease and Prevention (CDC) giving rise after World War in 1946. Vaccinations are what I captured in chapter one in the nineteenth century between 1850s and how about (30,000) persons died from yellow fever and cholera epidemics. Many have died from contaminated water and food, inadequate living situations and sewage disposals. Now in this century there are vaccinations for these disease and many others that has dropped the death rate since then as with better disposing of sewage and safeguarding our foods and facilities with the concern of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have also helped with the decrease of morality, deaths and illnesses reduction. B)What areas of health care I am interested in pursuing? Why? I am interested in the Center for Disease Control (CDC), which involve national concern to deal pre-existing conditions of disease to control and prevent them. The best part about pursuing a healthcare career is that you will be making a positive impact on people’s lives. In fact, there’s no other occupation where I could get the opportunity to make such a strong impact in the lives of people. It really gives me a lot of satisfaction and enthusiasts when I can save an ending life or help bring a new life into the world. By treating different forms of ailments, and I will also make a great positive impact on the entire community. Another big advantage of pursuing a healthcare career is that I will never have a dull moment because the medical field is ever-changing; it always keeps me excited about new developments and advancements in technologies. The profession is really dramatic in nature, and I will never get bored because I want to always interacting with new patients helping them to improve their lives. Another option or choice would be health promotion so that help people learn and give information on what they can do to stay healthy that is why I am doing Information Technology System blending these courses. Another choice would be with illness and prevention services which also educate consumers on risk factors that were conveyed in chapter 2. C) Which positive and negative health outcomes linked to demographic indicators intrigued me? â€Å"Health care is the process of diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease, illness, injury, and other physical and mental impairments in humans.† (Wikipedia, 2012). There are many forms of care that can be practiced from medicine, chiropractic, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, psychiatric and much more. With the fact that there is emerging trend towards overweight-obesity in poorer families, and it is one of the major illnesses that concern is attached. This is, of course, not true in developing countries, but can be seen in North America because mass produced unhealthy food is cheaper and is easier to find in poorer neighborhoods. We are putting our lives in the hands of others to care for that is why one can see why health coverage can be extremely expensive. Health care varies from place to place, and it is largely influenced by social and economic situations as well as health policies that are in place. There is a wide range of area in health care that one can contribute their help in making a difference in people’s lives. There are many forms of care that can be practiced from medicine, chiropractic, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, psychiatric and much more. That’s primarily because 45.7 million Americans are without health insurance. That’s roughly 16 percent of Americans who sometimes have to forego healthcare, or face financial obligations with insurance providers. The primary issues are access, and affordability of healthcare. In fact, the U.S. Department of Labor estimates that the health care and social assistance industry should create 28 percent of all new jobs between 2010 and 2020. And when it comes to the industry itself, heath care is expected to increase by 33 percent (that’s 5.7 million jobs!) between 2010 and 2020. D) What resources are there for finding more information on the history of health care in the United Sates? The internet search engines, Public libraries, and my student website are ways of obtaining information. As many people have discovered, clicking on a favorite search engine and entering a disease or medical condition can often result in hundreds, even thousands, of â€Å"hints.† This can be discouraging, and here are a few ideas for filtering the available web pages to a manageable number: 1. If you are using a search engine such as Google or Yahoo, take advantage of the health subsets of these services for your search. Learn how to use the advanced searching features of the sites so that you can combine terms to make your retrieval more precise. For example, entering the term â€Å"cancer† and â€Å"chemotherapy† linked together is more powerful and precise than trying to read through all the ideas found by simply entering the general term â€Å"cancer.† 2. Become familiar with the general health information finding tools such as MedlinePlus (http://www.medlineplus.gov), produced by the National Library of Medicine, or Healthfinder  ® (http://www.healthfinder.gov) from the US Department of Health and Human Services. 3. When you have found sites that look relevant, use the guidelines below to help you decide whether the information is as credible, timely, and useful as it looks. These are few websites that we can site with viable information about health care; http://www.ahrq.gov/consumer, http://www.nih.gov, http://www.medicare.gov

Andres mothers silence passim the play shows that she never accepted her sons sexuality.Even though she wasnt accepting she let her son rest in peace and let his soul ascend to heaven. Andres love of landing field and the play hamlet gave us an perceptivity to his life. At the beginning of the play Cal expresses Andres love of theatre. C al expresses, God, how much he treasured to play hamlet again. He would vex gone to Timbuktu to have another go at that part. The summer he did in Boston, he was so happy (McNally 736). This reference to Hamlet, I believe showcases the struggles Andre went through. Andre struggled with decision-making and avoiding things, as did Hamlet.Hamlet struggled whether to avenge his father and struggled with the decision that he had been avoiding. This is also apparent when Cal brings up Andres great performance saying, You should have practice up the summer he plated Hamlet. He was magnificent(McNally 738). I believe the Hamlet reference was to showcase Andre and his internal struggles. McNally uses quick a strong sense of symbolism throughout the story. First by holding a white balloon, the characters were holing a facsimile of Andres life and the memories that they each had of him.By releasing the balloon, they were letting go of the gloom of his death and for some, the secret hed been keeping from his family. This also represented the go through over of Andre. In the story, Andre was afraid of being rejected by his mother, whose silence throughout the play proves that she was incapable of offering acceptance to his homosexuality. With Andres love of the theater and specifically Hamlet, he is relating himself to one of the most recognised internal struggles of the theater world.

By living authentically, he will be able to liberate himself from the barriers that are cast to him by his society. By transcending the presupposed points-in-life, the true purpose of his existence become so clear to him. With the knowledge of his existences ultimate purpose, he can formulate the best finales for himself. Deciding according to his own choices will lead him towards the fulfilment of his personal goals. In sum, all these things will guide him to a much comfortable and a better life in which he lives through the assistance of his own choices and according to his very true nature. Indeed, aut henticity is truly pregnant to a mans life. The most mportant conniption of living an authentic life is total freedom. Because of total freedom, man is able to make personal choices and also, he leads his life to anew.
